Rationale
The ancient Greeks have made many contributions to modern society. The general curriculum outcome for the study of ancient Greece states that students should understand how civilization emerged in the Aegean the influence which shaped that civilization and the influences it exerted on other civilizations. Greeks made contributions to language, literature, drama, government, sport, entertainment, architecture, science and so forth. Understanding these contributions and their place they hold in modern society will allow students evaluate the significance of these contributions. This project will also provide students with the opportunity to take responsibility for part of their own and the learning of their peers by assisting the teacher with instruction. The project serves as both a formative and summative assessment. Students will also work in groups of two or three and compile this information in a collaborative manner.
Description
In a 5 minute presentation students will present the contribution they have chosen through a weebly page they have created for their topic. Students will work in pairs.
Students will:
--Describe the Greek contribution they selected.
-What was it? Who played a role in its development? When was it developed? Why was it important?
--Explain how their assigned Greek contribution has influenced our modern society.
-What signs do we see of the contribution in today’s society? How has this contribution affected modern society in comparison to other Greek contributions?
--Consider what the world would be like without the contribution. Support your opinions with evidence
*Should have at least five sources of research
Standards
· Demonstrate subject content knowledge and understanding
· Understand people in past societies and recognize and explain similarities and differences that exist between people, places, and events through time
· Analyze and interpret information from a wide range of sources and identify key questions, problems and issues
· Present and express information and ideas in a clear, concise manner, using appropriate language, and style
Summary Evaluation
v Each student is responsible for completing a summary and analysis of their role in the group
v Summary should include:
o Name of Greek contribution
o Explain what they were responsible for/Responsibility of group member(s)
o What was challenging? Were there any issues with the topic or group setting?
o What worked well?
v Students will be evaluated with a rubric
v Audience members will be responsible for recording the main points of the presentation: What they learned; why it was important.
Presentation
v Students should divide between themselves equal amounts of work and presentation time.
v Students will research the contribution they have selected
v Students should have images or visual aids to present to the class during the presentation.
v Each student should:
o Have equal parts during the introduction, body, and conclusion of the presentation.
o Present own findings of ancient Greeks that helped make the contribution.
